When I first started working in politics, I realized something very quickly - marketing a candidate to voters is no different than marketing a double cheeseburger to consumers.
My skills from my advertising and branding days were transferrable in a way that benefitted candidates and ballot issues, because I approach campaigns and marketing candidates to voters differently than most in the industry. My experience working in advertising and marketing for national consumer brands helps me to see candidates differently than most who approach campaigns.
I view the candidate in a holistic way, prioritizing consistent but compelling messaging, storytelling, and consistency in visuals/branding. My strategic approach to campaigns helps set the messaging I create for candidates apart from their competitors. While I am not a formally trained copywriter (and much prefer working with experienced writers), over time I have honed in on how best to create content for campaigns that speaks directly to voters hearts and minds in the instance a candidate needs me to create from scratch or evolve their platform.
My favorite candidates to do work for are minority and female candidates because I believe government works best when it looks like it’s people.
